My work in the Andes

Information about the different projects of Ecotrackers in the Andes

After the first week in Quito, we have travelled with five people (2 Canadians, one German, one Ozzi and me) south to Banos. From there we have made different trips and have just been hanging out the tourist.

Bus to Guamote; about 1.5 hours.
Bus from Guamote to Alausi; about 1 hour.
Train from Alausi to Nariz de Diablo; return about 3 hours.

Mountainbike in the Andes: couple of hours, bike can return by bus.

Otavalo Market and Nariz de Diablo
Guamote is an indigenous market not to far from Banos. We were the only extranjeros here. It is a nice small town, overcrowded with people and al sorts of stuff: a lot of food, but also artesanias, clothes, tools for at home, in the bathroom or in the kitchen.

After that we went to Alausi, a little town in the Andes. From there we took a train in the morning to El Nariz de Diablo (The Devils Nose). On the top of a train we cruised with a lot of other foreigners for a couple of hours through the Andes. Really a Gringo thing. This is how the people of Ecuador call the foreigners.

Mountainbiking through the Andes
The last day in Banos we met up with Maximiliano (director from Ecotrackers) and another Ozzi. We rented mountainbikes and went down to Puyo. The road is almost all the way down, through the Andes, past cloudforest, past waterfalls, through tunnels...

This is really an exciting thing to do when you are in Banos and in the end you can cycle back, but you can also get transport (including the bike) back to Banos.
